Infection Control Program Assessment Opportunity for Facilities

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity (ELC) Building and Strengthening Epidemiology, Laboratory and Health Information Systems Capacity in State and Local Health Departments grant has developed an assessment tool to assist health care facilities in assessing infection prevention policies, procedures, and processes; identifying gaps; and improving response plans and quality.  The assessment tools are for acute care hospitals, long term acute care hospitals, long term care facilities, ambulatory care centers, and dialysis centers.

As part of the grant, the ISDH has contracted with two experienced infection control nurses to help guide health care facilities through these assessments.  The assessment coordinators will focus on assessing and improving infection prevention and control programs.  Susan Kraska is a registered nurse with an extensive infection prevention background.  Her focus will be assisting long term care facilities, ambulatory care centers and dialysis centers.  Cathleen Booker, a registered nurse, comes with a strong background in the acute care and public health settings.

Participating facilities will be sent a survey document to complete and return.  The coordinator will review the document and schedule an onsite visit to discuss opportunities to improve and/or strengthen their program.  This assessment process will help eliminate gaps and increase readiness to respond to infection prevention and control issues.  The Infection Control Assessment Tool is available for review by facilities.

Health care facility participation is entirely voluntary and unrelated to the surveys conducted by the ISDH Health Care Quality and Regulatory Commission.
