HCBS Rule & Wandering/Exit-seeking Presentation

On July 27, CMS had a webinar on the HCBS rule as it relates to wandering and exit seeking. The presenters were Ralph Lollar and Serena Lowe from CMS, Jane Tilly from ACL and Doug Pace from the Alzheimer's Association. Click here to see the presentation slides. Some of the highlights from the webinar include:

1. Person centered service planning - Timing and setting should of the service plan meeting should be determined by the resident.
2. It was suggested to use the term "lost person plan" versus "elopement plan"
3. Locked unit doors - A memory care unit cannot lock the unit doors based on one resident's behaviors of wandering/exit seeking (for example). Suggestions to address this behavior for a resident include the facility assessing how to adjust the setting so it maximizes each individual's respect and autonomy. Utilize secured egress doors versus locked doors. And, any modification/intervention needs to be documented and service planned and periodically reviewed to see if it's still required.
